Antique violin, possibly a Perry (Dublin, 1760)
This is a very old violin of uncertain origin, believed to date from around 1760. It bears a worn paper label inside that reads “Dublin 1760”, and on the back, the name “Perry” is hand carved in a somewhat unsteady scrip, suggesting it may be linked to the well-known Perry family of luthiers active in 18th Century Dublin, particularly Thomas and William Perry.
The violin has the patina and craftsmanship typical of instruments from that period, with signs of age and use throughout. The body shows some wear consistent with its age, but it remains structurally sound. The tone warm and mature, with a depth that reflects its possible historical lineage.
Please note: The attribution to Perry is speculative. While the label and carving are suggestive of a very early Perry, the violin has not been professionally appraised or authenticated. It would make an intriguing project for a collector or historian of Irish violins.
